SEO vs AEO: what changes (and what doesn’t)
SEO still means helping people find you in search. AEO means helping answer engines cite you accurately. Most of the fundamentals overlap — the coaching differences matter.
What stays the same
Clear titles and meta. Honest headings. Fast, mobile-friendly pages. Internal links that make sense. A site Google can crawl. None of that went away because chatbots got popular.
What AEO emphasizes more
- Direct answers near the top of key pages (BLUF)
- Entity clarity — who you are, what you sell, where you serve
- Question-shaped content on commercial pages, not every blog draft
- Schema that matches the visible page
Where toolkits go wrong
Classic SEO plugins treat every URL like a content asset. They’ll nag a privacy policy for FAQ schema and ding a thin thank-you page for “answer readiness.” That’s noise. SAEO keeps separate SEO and AEO scores and excludes utility pages from AEO pressure.
A practical split for freelancers
Month one: fix blockers that hurt both SEO and AEO (missing titles, broken links, unclear home/service pages). Later: deepen answer-ready blocks on the pages that earn calls. See the Growth Plan overview.
